Spring Essentials – Lorena Severi

With winter well and truly on its way out for another year we can breath a sigh of relief and get into the swing of spring. This month's Styl-E-Letter is all about health and cleansing so I decided to take the opportunity to cleanse from the inside out with a health kick.

I booked in to the exclusive beauty salon Lorena Severi for 10 visits to the Weight Loss Centre to "discover my perfect shape".

The ever-welcoming staff explained the process to me in simplified terms:

Our body is made up of organs, muscles, fat and a few other bits and pieces. You have essential fats which help to keep your internal organs at 37° no matter what the outside temperature. These fats are called the Thermal Insulator. Your epidermis, which is near your skin acts as a rubbish bin to get rid of excess fat. However, with our lifestyle today, our epidermis has stopped functioning properly and we cannot get rid of the excess fat simply by exercising. Slimming only works if the fat is used as an energy source.

The Lorena Severi method is based on the following scientific process: the practice of physical activity in an overheated environment. This confuses the body resulting in the elimination of the thermal insulator that is no longer needed, thus burning fat.

To achieve the equivalent weight loss of the Lorena Severi technique we would need to exercise for 6 hours straight in order to heat the muscles and fat sufficiently to loose weight.

Physical activity is intensified with the use of light weights. This process accelerates slimming around any given muscle mass. Why? It has been shown that muscles which are exercised with the help of light weights warm up quicker and this warmth is transmitted to the fatty tissues surrounding them. Fat which is warmed can be metabolised as an energy-providing source faster than fat which is cold. The reason for this is when fat is warmed first the body does not recognise it as an insulator; so it starts using it to burn as an energy source.

It was after hearing this information that I decided to give it a try and to keep a journal to share my experience with you.

Day One

I had no idea what to expect from the program, all I knew was that Europeans rarely exercise in the open yet they are all so slim, something must be working!

I had been visiting the gym regularly for 4 months and was finding it hard to tone up my body plus, the stress to my joints and ankles was causing issues.

My trainer Tony started me off with a program focusing on tummy, hips, butt, thighs and arms and while I won't say it was easy it certainly beat slogging it out in a gym for three hours. C'mon I was lying down!

After retreating to my personal shower, it was time for the best part of the program, the Chromotherapy Tank. This makes it all worth it! It is the most relaxing experience that creates a sense of wellness that lasts the rest of the day.

For half an hour I lay in a warm and sheltered space with essential oils and music wafting over me. The entire Lorena Severi environment is under chromotherapy lighting which is a vibration of frequency. Every colour has a different frequency. This frequency is a 100% natural treatment that stimulates the correct components of the metabolism. Through chromotherapy lighting a holistic vision is created - a combination of mind, body and spirit. This balances the body as everything is one and the components of light frequencies & energy are in relation.

At the completion of my session, I am invited to experience a complimentary blow-dry and makeup to help me re-enter the world.

Day Two

I could not wait for my next appointment, that feeling of wellbeing that comes from doing something great for your body. The best part is the reward you get after the training session. I knew what to expect in the Chromotherapy Tank and knew that if I worked hard the reward would be so worth it.

The exercises were still intense but I pushed myself harder this time mostly because I knew the reward that was to come. Knowing that you get to relax your body and mind before leaving the salon is well worth it.

The salon feels like an exclusive women's club. You have your own shower with pebbled floors luxurious robes and towels and such a sense of privacy. It's totally addictive. You are treating yourself to such a pampered experience yet at the same time, you are giving your body the help it needs to be toned and healthy.

My trainer has asked me to attend the salon twice a week and gym twice a week. I can already feel results just from two sessions. My clothes are looser and my husband has commented on the muscle developing under the skin where there used to be a layer of fat. I cannot wait to see what happens by the end of ten sessions.

Day Three

I feel amazing! I cannot stop talking to anybody I meet about the program, it is making such a difference to my exercise regime. I feel better and can see the difference in my clothes. The "skinny" jeans fit and are actually getting too loose around the waist. I can see the benefits of mixing the program with my regular cardio gym exercise. I am eating better which I am told by Lorena is a direct result of the Chromotherapy Tank. She explained that our metabolism falls out of sync due to lack of sunshine and outdoor activity. The tank provides the exact sunlight rays that vibrate through your skin and help to put your body in order. And here I thought it was just a reward for working hard! Its actually a necessary part of the program.

I am so excited about the results so far and can't wait to fill you all in next month!

By now, we should all be familiar with the benefits of eating organics, but what many of us don't realise are the harmful effects from using skincare filled with chemicals. When using your regular skincare and personal care products have you have experienced symptoms of allergic reactions such as skin irritations – redness, stinging, dryness etc or even worse irritations of the eye? You are not alone!

A large portion of the population experiences these allergic reactions. Shampooing your hair is a classic example - have you ever got the shampoo in your eyes? Not a pleasant experience. You have to wonder what chemicals are damaging your eyes!

These are the obvious external problems you encounter.  What about the not so obvious internal long-term problems caused by toxins and chemicals being absorbed through your skin?

The organic movement began at the same time as industrialised agriculture. It evolved through the '50s and '60s with farmers educating the pubic about the toxic effects of pesticides being absorbed into the body. During the '70s, the development of the organic market was stimulated by growing consumer interest in health and nutrition, as well as the increasing importance of preserving the natural environment. We now understand that these toxins are a major contributing link to cancer and other serious medical conditions as well s the continuing destruction to our environment.

Because of this, more and more people are converting to an organic lifestyle. We decided to test these theories and spring clean our life by trying organics. We started with our beauty cabinet…

The best way to choose a beauty product range is to look at the ingredient listing on the packaging. If you don't understand most of the inclusions, chances are they are bad for you. The following is a list of ingredients you don't want in your face wash:

Parabens: one of the most commonly used group of preservatives in cosmetics and skincare, (has been directly linked to breast cancer)

Sulphates: serves as a base surfactant and foaming agent, commonly used in cleansers, shower gels and shampoo

MIT (Methylisothiazolinone): is a powerful biocide and preservative (has been linked to nerve cell death)

Artificial Fragrances: synthetic fragrances are added to cosmetics and skincare for aroma (7–18% of individuals have some sensitivity to fragrance)

Artificial Colours: colour can be found listed as FD&C, D&C, and Ext.

Lanolin: derivative formed by a fat like viscous secretion of the sheep's sebaceous glands (has a history of pesticide inclusions)

SD Alcohol: widely used in the cosmetic industry as an antiseptic and a solvent (drying and sensitising to the skin)

Isopropyl Myristate: used as an emollient, moisturiser, and skin softener that also assists in product penetration (causes skin irritation)

Formaldehyde: preservative used in cosmetics & skincare (medical journals have documented the negative effects of formaldehyde exposure to include: dizziness, nausea, fatigue, reduced limb strength, headaches, eye, nose, throat irritation, breathing difficulties, shortness of breath, excessive phlegm, dermatitis, chest pain, wheezing, diarrhea, vomiting, etc)

Petroleum By-Products / Coal Tars / Mineral Oil: all by-products in the distillation of petroleum

Animal Derived Products: BAD

Testing on Animals: BAD

Botanical Extracts

We chose Botanical Extracts as it is an Australian company offering consumers a highly effective, yet safe alternative to the heavily chemical based cosmetic and older industry standard formulations currently circulating through the professional beauty salon and particularly the supermarket / chemist environment.

Their products are free of lots of nasty chemicals found in your everyday brands. Because of this, they have no need to test on our furry friends, as they don't use any questionable chemical compounds.

Holistic by design with a strict no-inclusion policy, omitting all Parabens that have been linked to breast cancer, and other harmful ingredients, the range provides the ultimate mind, skin and body experience.

The range consists of Skin Care, Body Care, an Unscented Body Range, Aromatherapy oils, Massage Oils, an Ayurvedic Range and Accessories to create the total mind, skin and body experience.

Thoroughly Modern Sydney - 1920's & 30's Glamour & Style

Museum of Sydney until 15 October 2006

From the Art Deco skyscrapers of the city centre to modern home design and interiors, Thoroughly Modern Sydney is a new exhibition at the museum of Sydney until the 15 October featuring the photographs of Harold Cazneaux and Sydney style in the 1920's and 30's.

The exhibition includes Cazneaux's work for the ever so sophisticated Home magazine featuring photographs of the residences of Sydney's leading families as well as many influential designers, architects and artists of the period, all who exemplified "good taste".

Cazneaux's work was incredibly well known and this exhibition is a great way to understand the fabric of Sydney society during this period and how people were interconnected.

As someone who is totally in love with this town I thought it would be a treat to send some of the Styl-E-Letter readers along to this revealing exhibition. We are at a time when Sydney must grab the opportunity to become an important international city and the best way to do this is to educate ourselves about the style of the past.

The Museum of Sydney is located on the corner of Phillip and Bridge Street, Sydney.

For further information contact MOS: 02 9251 5988

We have two double passes to the exhibition to give away. To enter this great competition, simply forward this newsletter to five friends you believe need a spring-clean out. Include our email info@melaniemoss.com.au and you will be entered into the draw to win one of the two double passes.

Competition ends 25 August 2006
