Knitwear

With winter well and truly upon us, its time to turn our attention to knitwear that has been hiding in the cupboard for nine months.

The key with knitwear is to apply the "spend as much as you can afford" rule. You can pay $60 for an acrylic manmade jumper that will last two wears before pilling and losing shape or you can spend around $200 and buy something that will last a lifetime.

This month we are featuring luxury, knitwear label Jac+Jack. This label combines simplicity of design with beautiful detailing. Created from premium yarns like worsted cashmere, superfine merino wool and mercerised cotton, Jac + Jack's distinctively coloured knitwear has an organic, tactile quality, which feels gorgeous against the skin.

When choosing your knitwear you should be looking out for the following yarns:

Cashmere

The rarest and most precious fibre in the world. Cashmere is as luxurious as it gets. Cashmere hair is very slow growing, the cashmere goat takes four years to grow enough hair for one sweater. Some of cashmeres unique characteristics are:

Superfine Merino

Superfine merino wool is bred to have a unique fibre structure. Superfine merino refers to merino wool 18 micron or less. This unique structure enables the fibre when knitted into sweaters to display the following characteristics:

Mercerised Cotton

The term mercerised refers to the lustre process given to cotton yarn or fabric, which is mostly done on superior cottons. Cottons that have fine and long staple fibre length, these cottons are usually; Sea island, Egyptian and Pima Cottons. Mercerisation gives cotton the following characteristics:

Pima Cotton

Pima cotton refers to superior grade cottons. The long, fine staple length gives the cotton greater strength and silkiness resulting in qualities such as:

Silk

Silk is a luxury fibre that has been used in textiles and yarns for centuries. An ancient material has exotic and luxurious characteristics:

Linen

Linen is a natural fibre that is stubby and gauze like in its look, making it an ideal summer yarn. This natural look gives linen purity and a home-spun feel. Perfect for long summer days. Its characteristics are:

Jac + Jack Spring Summer

These gorgeous cashmere knits are available from August in selected boutiques.

The Headband

Many clients have asked us recently about the return of the headband to fashion. You want to know what styles to buy, how to wear it and whether someone over 21 should be caught dead wearing one. The answer is as always yes, if it is done to suit you, and worn with confidence. It is also a great way to keep your hair off your face and look stylish at the same time.

There are two main ways to wear the headband and they fall into the daytime / night-time category.

To wear the headband by day, blow-dry hair straight with a side part drying the fringe forward before sweeping to the side. Place headband on your head with all hair falling behind it. Backcomb hair from the crown to gain height behind the headband, making sure you softly brush over the top to create sleekness. This look works best with a thick, flat headband in a shiny tortishell. Use lashings of mascara to ensure you don't come off looking like a school girl and you are finished.

To wear by night, blow-dry hair straight before backcombing your hair from the forehead backwards to create lots of height. Carefully brush hair from both sides of your head into a high ponytail, which should sit right on your crown. Ensure you keep the height from the backcombing but create sleekness at the sides of your head – you want this to look like you threw it together, without the missed the alarm clock look. Place the headband close to the forehead and wrap some hair around the elastic of the ponytail, securing with bobby pins. This looks works best with a thin black headband or try a black velvet ribbon secured underneath the ponytail. Plump up the ponytail and slip on some black eyeliner and lip-gloss and you are ready.

Country Road

We feel like all we are wearing at the moment is Country Road after attending the amazing sale last week with 50% off the sale price, we bought a whole new wardrobe.

Best buys are the silk georgette Grecian dress, tailored beige pants, tailored check pants, 100% pure silk camisoles, black jersey dresses, accessories and shoes especially the boots if you can get your hands on some.

Stay away from the peasant style skirts and loose jersey baby doll tops – they won't be coming back for a while.

The suiting for men is fantastic, with a great range of sizes still available. The shirts are not fantastic but the silk ties are well worth it at $40, beautiful quality and gorgeous prints.

Make sure you check out the home-wear section and grab the gorgeous 100% silk nightwear – makes a great summer dress.

Winter Weekends Away Blue Mountains

Imperial Hotel, Mount Victoria

Opened in October 1878 as a Resort Hotel with private Golf Course, Tennis Court, Croquet Lawn, Home Farm and horse-drawn Coaches to Jenolan Caves, the Imperial is the oldest Tourist Hotel in Australia.

Located in the heart of Mount Victoria Village, the last remaining authentic 19th Century village in the Blue Mountains, The Hotel Imperial has more recently become famous for its theme parties and weekends. Murder Mystery Weekends combining the best of participative entertainment and good food are extremely popular.

First you will be invited to choose the theme for your Host A Murder Mystery Dinner Party.

You then receive invitations to distribute to your other guests (normally about ten people). You invite each of your friends/colleagues to come as a character and they can dress up accordingly if they wish (dressing up is optional – but more fun!)

The three most popular Host a Murder themes are:

Other themes include: Roman Ruins, The Good, The Bad, and the Guilty, and The Maiming of the Shrew.

You arrive at The Imperial on Saturday morning. Dinner and Host a Murder Saturday night includes a three-course meal. You then depart Sunday morning.

We suggest you spend Saturday morning doing the vintage stores in Katoomba and Sunday wandering around gorgeous Leura and perhaps visit The Everglades Garden.

Accommodation costs start from $25 backpacker twin share to $220 for the Imperial Suite with four-poster bed.
