Basics and Trends – a fools proof guide

Basics are quality items that fall into the cheap and cheerful category. They don't cost a lot of money and generally need to be updated each season. They include items such as cotton tops, singlets, camisoles, underwear socks and hosiery. Functional items that you wear with your everyday wardrobe for comfort and style.

Look for brands such as Esprit, Target and Cotton On for their excellent basics that last without stretching and colour fade. Never purchase a basic item that isn't a natural fibre. You will never get longevity out of the item.

Purchase basics in colours to suit your investment wardrobe. Again look for black, beige, navy and chocolate for easy wearing. You can then also inject colours that work with your wardrobe and accessories – a red top to suit those pink beads you never wear for example.

Fashionista or Fashion Victim – A word on trends

Trends can be fun and are certainly a part of everyone's wardrobe. There are however, very strict rules when buying into a trend. If your wardrobe is all trends, like the stock market crash of 1929 you can cause similar damage to your look and professional image. Never spend too much on a trend item and never buy in too heavily. Purchase one or two fun items each season that work well with your investment wardrobe. Ensure the trend piece suits your body shape: not all of us suit the Lolita look currently on the catwalk of micro shorts and platforms. Instead choose long line, tailored shorts that reach past the knee and a pair of cork espadrilles.

Places like Sportsgirl, Supre and Dotti are perfect for trendy items that won't cost a fortune. They won't last long but that's generally a good thing as you don't want to be wearing last season's hippy skirt this year.

Next months Styl-E-letter will teach you how to shop for the perfect wardrobe using the Melanie Moss Rules of Style.

Best Kept Secret in Sydney

When somebody looks great it is normally because they have spent time on the overall package. It isn't enough to have great style or perfect hair. You need to find the easiest and fastest way to complete your look.

It can be hard to achieve this on a budget but that is what we are here for! May's Styl-E-letter is concentrating on discount services and products to help you look great!

Michelle's Nails Bondi

There won't be too many people impressed with me when this goes to print as I am about to tell you about the most skilled, friendly nail shop we have found in Sydney.

Located a 1/205 Bondi Road, Bondi, you can get a full manicure and pedicure for $40, not each, as a package! The girls at Michelle's do a fantastic job with the best arm and foot massage around.

The manicure lasts about a week without chipping whilst the pedicure only needs to be done once a month.

Phone 02 9369 4770 for an appointment as the place is always packed. Best times to go are during the afternoon from 2pm onwards.

Discount Beauty

Target is the best place to find the amazing Olay range. This month they have included a cream facial cleanser with their star product Total Effects. Probably the best moisturiser the Melanie Moss team has tried with plenty of recommendations from clients, we think you should race out and grab this great package.

It is currently priced at $27.95 while stocks last.

Urban Soul

Check out the new range of heels from Urban Soul. They are going where no one has gone before and creating different heel heights. For the first time you can choose from a medium heel or stiletto in the same design of shoe. Or if you are like me you can buy both designs and swap to the low heel when your feet start to ache!

Myer

I'm not usually a fan of Myer, especially its internal ranges however, this month whilst shopping for a client I spied an amazing skirt in the Basque range. A very simple black skirt with manstyle pocketing and detail, it has an incredible cut to suit all body shapes. Very much the look of the moment, but certainly a classic cut and style that will last in coming seasons. The skirt can be dressed up or down easy with the right accessories and retails for $99. A great price when compared to similar skirts coming on the market.

Prét-a-Portea – A Fashionista's Afternoon Tea

In collaboration with Moët Hennessey, Twinings Teas and Christian Dior Parfums, Park Hyatt Sydney has created a series of afternoon teas that will take place at the Hyatt's Harbour Kitchen restaurant, over-looking the gorgeous Sydney Harbour and Opera House.

Commencing in May 2006, the high tea will be held mid-week and occur once each month.  The event will be a celebration of the ritual of afternoon tea and all things elegant.

Features of the afternoon tea will include:

Time:       2:30 pm for 3:00 show

Day:        Wednesday 10th May

Cost:       $55 per person

Apart from the usual celebrity spotting that occurs front row at fashion events, you will have the chance to hear yours truly as the Park Hyatt has kindly asked myself to MC the event and help entertain guests with a talk on fashion and how to update your winter wardrobe with fabulous new looks by Trent Nathan.

To purchase tickets contact Meryn Rayner on 02 9256 1437 or email meryn.rayner@hyatt.com.au.

We have two tickets to give away for you and a girlfriend to join us on this gorgeous afternoon. All you have to do is email the May Styl-E-letter to 5 friends, its that easy! Include our email: info@melaniemoss.com.au, make sure you are available on the 10th May and you could be a lucky winner!

We hope you enjoyed the May Styl-E-letter.
